Non-Monotonicity and Real-Time Reasoning

چکیده
All forms of non-monotonic reasoning so far proposed suffer from a common failing: they are not computationally highly effective, indeed for the most part cannot be carried out even in principle. They inv olve either selfconsistency tests, or general theorem-proving techniques. Here we argue that, in fact, all non-monotonic logics proposed involve a kind of self-referential reasoning, and that this leads to an inherent resourcelimitation. This, in turn, leads to a different view of non-monotonicity than has been given before. Finally, we suggest that this can be turned into a plus for reasoning systems in specific implementational details.

Reasoning situated in time I: basic concepts
The needs of a real-time reasoner situated in an environment may make it appropriate to view error-correction and non-monotonicity as much the same thing. This has led us to formulate situated (or step) logic, an approach to reasoning in which the formalism has a kind of real-time self-reference that affects the course of deduction itself. Here we seek to motivate this as a useful vehicle for e...
متن کاملVerifying monotonicity of Bayesian networks with domain experts
In many real problem domains, the main variable of interest behaves monotonically in the observable variables, in the sense that higher values for the variable of interest become more likely with higher-ordered observations. This type of knowledge appears to arise naturally during knowledge elicitation, without explicit prompting. The monotonicity properties declared by experts, however, may no...
متن کاملNonmonotonicity and Human Probabilistic Reasoning
Nonmonotonic logics allow—contrary to classical (monotone) logics— for withdrawing conclusions in the light of new evidence. Nonmonotonic reasoning is often claimed to mimic human common sense reasoning. Only a few studies, though, have investigated this claim empirically. system p is a central, broadly accepted nonmonotonic reasoning system that proposes basic rationality postulates. We previo...
متن کاملTractable Form of Non-Monotonic Reasoning to Generate Belief Set
1. ABSTRACT Nonmonotonic reasoning is intended to apply specifically in situation where the initial information is incomplete. The most important property of traditional system is monotonicity, i.e. addition of new facts to the database or to the theory does not result in any previous fact being retracted. There does not exist any inconsistency between the old statements and newly added stateme...
متن کاملTwo Kinds of Non-monotonic Analogical Inference Two Kinds of Non-monotonic Analogical Inference ?
This paper addresses two modi of analogical reasoning. The rst modus is based on the explicit representation of the justiication for the analogical inference. The second modus is based on the representation of typical instances by concept structures. The two kinds of analogical inferences rely on diierent forms of relevance knowledge that cause non-monotonicity. While the uncertainty and non-mo...
